- shot variety
- sound - post prod, careful consideration, use of foley where appropriate
- cross-cutting (used effectively in 'waxed' 2012(?) 3 way crosscut to build tension- kettle, eyes, woman in tanning booth)
- Use visual/audio as much as if not more than dialogue (eg 'I do love battin' in a draft was used for exposition - closeup of throwing a can away would have been more effect/natural)
- Do not need to compose own music, creating own version of existing is ok -> cannot use existing recording of copyrighted material
- Use of countertypes - challenge/use conventions
- take into account modern audience - challenge stereotypes, archetypes and conventions (eg woman killer in 'waxed')

- Health and safety check (eg falling down stairs in 'red Run')
- Can create mature mood and imply more and still make it appropriate (eg bottom of legs in shower)
- can take inspiration form existing material (eg 'Red Run' took a lot form the Child's Play franchis, or 'Candelabra' from Submarine)

- Voice-over can be highly effective (include diegetic sounds too)
- Transitions can be fun (eg swipe)
- Must be binary opposition
- Transition into main film does not have to be excessive (2 shots is enough)
- filming at night is problematic without light rigs (poses challenges for image quality, could look for plugins on motion to make things look like night in post)
- if you do not have permission to film inside a building can still film outside of it and frame it so it look like someone is coming out of it (eg in 'The Asylum')
- Candles can be effective for lighting depending on context as we don't have access to high key lighting
- 'Black Nightmare' had good use of sound (sharpening knife, meat) - also good intertextuality 'Damian you little devil' - reference to the film Omen which core audience wouldn't understand, but secondary older audience would
